For the transition to a sustainable and climate-neutral energy system, transformation paths are needed to gradually change the current energy system. The modeling and analysis of energy systems with all its facets has developed into a focus area of energy research at LUH. A wide range of results from other areas of collaborative research are also used and brought together for this purpose.

From a systems perspective, Leibniz University Hannover has expertise in the field of energy system analysis, which focuses on the holistic design of networked and multimodal energy systems to defossilize the electricity, heating and mobility sectors as well as the chemical industry and heavy industry. Transformation scenarios are required for planning the conversion of the energy system that have sufficient flexibility to be able to react to as yet unforeseeable developments in technological, economic and geopolitical boundary conditions. To this end, tools and methods are being developed to master the complexity of the solutions. This is done in close cooperation with the various disciplinary fields of work in component research.

Other areas of research are also included, for example in the fields of environmental planning, acoustics, energy economics and energy law. With the resulting research findings, Leibniz Universität Hannover is a companion for politics and administration at federal, state and municipal level in achieving climate policy goals while at the same time complying with environmental, social and economic policy constraints.
